Unfallen

Unfallen is a new project-installation by Montreal-based artist Ramona Ramlochand, being shown for the first time. It opens up a broad discussion of “place” for her and is, in part, fuelled by the rapidly changing environment and technologically enhanced world that we live in.

Unfallen consists of a kinetic sculpture element with a close-circuit video transmission, and photographs.

Ramlochand wrote:
“Unfallen digs deeper into the recesses of time, and raises questions around how the past is constantly reinvented and relived in the present. It speaks about the ambiguity of place; the fragility and duplicity of the world; the mutability of time; the sense of shifting identity; the uncertainty of self.”

Ramona Ramlochand was born in Guyana, and grew up in England, Cyprus and Canada. She graduated with an MFA from Concordia University in 2004, and teaches Cinema and Communications at Dawson College in Montreal. She has been exhibiting in solo and collaborative and group exhibitions across Canada and the Americas, and in international group exhibitions since the early 1990s.

Most recently Ramlochand exhibited in the World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures, in Dakar, Senegal. Her works are represented in the collections of The Canada Council Art Bank, Musée du Québec, the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Art Gallery.

An illustrated exhibition guide will be available, with an essay by guest writer Haema Sivanesan, Director of Centre A, Vancouver.
