Island in a Tender State Island In a Tender State was originally conceived for my solo, site-specific installation at Galerie Oboro in Montreal. An aspect of the work was exhibited at the Biennale de l’image in Paris, curated by Regis Durand.
The various components that make up this work; video, sound, slide projections, sandboxes, and photo transparencies encased in pillars and doors, were used to create a create a series ‘islands’ that represent the fragility of (my)self and the mutability of time and space.
At the gallery entrance of the gallery, a glass pane from an old wooden door encases a photo transparency of myself sitting at my computer with a projected jungle scene from Central Africa surrounding me. This piece gave a glimpse into the world I created for the main gallery space. Inside the gallery large Sona tubes act as pillars positioned underneath skylights which house large photo transparencies which are illuminated by the sun. A circular sculptural piece is filled with white sand, that reveals a water image when one interacts with the sand by letting it filter through your fingers. The final component is a projection unto white sand on the floor that shows image of myself twisting and turning. A four-track sound component accompanies this piece.
